HPD officer recognized for heroism, saves couple from burning car

Rep. Mark Takai and Rep. Aaron Johanson, recognize HPD officer Unten

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow)- State lawmakers on Thursday honored a Honolulu Police Officer
and four Aiea residents who helped rescue an elderly couple from a burning car.

On February 8, Officer Kerwin Unten and the four residents heard
cries for help coming from a parking garage on Koauka loop in Aiea.

The five found a car burning
in the building's parking structure. The heroic group sprung into action entering the
burning car and pulled the couple out.

The elderly man and his wife, who is bound to a wheelchair,
are both doing fine.

The other honorees are Cornelio Nolasco, Lino Nolasco, Asher
Murro and Dennis Buenaventura.

City fire station hit with graffiti, is it neglected?

AIEA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- Less than a week after Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell signed a new proposal aimed at going after owners of neglected city properties, Hawaii News Now found a city building with tall weeds and grass in front and lots of graffiti on it.

The city's Aiea fire station has been closed since March of last year for more than a half million dollars of repairs. In the more than a year since it's been unoccupied by firefighters, the grass has grown pretty long and large weeds have sprouted up on its lawn.

The station -- built in 1971 -- needed asbestos removed and renovations to its offices, locker room and kitchen, according to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig.

"It's a project that's very similar to what we've done with a number of old fire stations.  Basically rehabilitating it so it's functional and serviceable for a number of years," Seelig said.

Aliamanu Middle and Pearlridge Elementary Schools now powered by the sun

Aliamanu Middle and Pearlridge Elementary Schools now powered by the sun

Hawaii Pacific Solar (HPS) recently completed the installation of  photovoltaic systems for both Aliamanu Middle and Pearl Ridge Elementary Schools. The latest of the Department of Education schools to receive PVs, and each school is estimated to save more than $500,000 over the 20-year life of the system.

The PV systems will each prevent 300,184 pounds of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere -- equivalent to the CO2 emissions from 15,265 gallons of gasoline or from 317 barrels of oil.

“The State Department of Education’s effort to conserve energy at our schools is continuing on both Oahu and Kauai,” said Bob Johnston, president and CEO of HPS. “Aliamanu and Pearl Ridge are the 11th  and 12th schools on Oahu to receive PV and we are proud to be a part of their energy conservation and  sustainability efforts.”
