USS Missouri Memorial Association Recognizes Outstanding Volunteers

Pearl Harbor — On a day that celebrated the 69th anniversary of the launch of the USS Missouri (BB-63) from Brooklyn Navy Yard and the 14th anniversary of the ship’s opening as a memorial in Pearl Harbor, the USS Missouri Memorial Association (UMMA) recognized all of their outstanding volunteers. In 2012 volunteers at the Battleship Missouri totaled over 5,695 volunteer days for 33,706 hours – an average of 15 volunteers and 92 hours per day.

Learn How to Download eBooks to Mobile Devices at Pearl City Library on Feb. 10

“How to Download eBooks to Mobile Devices,” a free instructional program, will be offered at Pearl City Public Library on Sunday, February 10 at 2 p.m. in the Adult Reading Section. 

Learn how to check out eBooks from the Library and download them to your eReader or tablet.  Interested participants should bring their mobile device with them for this hands-on demonstration.   

Participants of all ages are invited to attend this one-hour program.  Contact the Library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed, and to sign up for individual assistance with your mobile device after the program.  

Pearl City Public Library is located at 1138 Waimano Home Road, next to the Pearl City Police Station.  For more information and to sign up for individual assistance, please call the Library at 453-6566.

Leeward Community College encourages you to GET JOB READY in celebration of national Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month. Among the special activities scheduled are the following:

·      Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program from 9:00am – 1:00pm on Saturdays, and from 1:30pm – 5:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays through March

Woman dies after struck by garbage truck in Aiea

AIEA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow)- An elderly woman has
died after being struck by a garbage truck in Aiea Friday morning.

The incident happened around 8:50 a.m. on Kupuwao Place in Newtown Estates. The
driver of the City and County truck reversed into the woman who was standing
near the corner of Kupuwao Place and Kupukupu Street, according to first
responders. Neighbors said the area is common for senior citizens to take their
daily morning walks.

An ambulance rushed 83-year-old Pauline Ando to The Queens Medical Center in
extremely critical condition where she later died, EMS officials said.

The driver of the truck, who has worked for the City for 22 years, was
unharmed.  He will receive help from an employee assistance program should
he need counseling.

The driver will also be put on paid administrative leave until the
investigation is complete.

Palisades Elementary School locked down as police search for burglary suspect

PEARL CITY, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) -- Police locked down an elementary school in Pearl City Thursday following a burglary at a nearby home. 

According to police, a neighbor witnessed two people breaking into a house on Apoepoe Street shortly after 11 a.m.  They allegedly stole a computer and jewelry.  

When police arrived, they took one man into custody, but the other suspect ran in the direction of the school.  Palisades Elementary School was locked down for several hours as law enforcement officers canvassed the area.

No description of the second suspect has been released.

All teachers and students were never in danger, officials say.  Hawaii News Now will bring you more details as soon as they become available.
