In celebration of the 2013 HSPLS Summer Reading Programs, Aiea Public Library will offer free events and a movie screening in June.  All events will be conducted in the Meeting Room:

Fukushima Radiation Update Offered at Pearl City Library on May 5

“Is Fukushima Still a Radiation Threat Two Years Later?,” a free program, will be presented at Pearl City Public Library on Sunday, May 5 at 2 p.m. in the Adult Reading Section.

Dean Otsuki will discuss how Japan, the Pacific Ocean, the jetstream, and the United States have been affected by radiation still spewing from the disabled nuclear power plant.  Otsuki will also share what information Tokyo Electric Power Company, the Japanese and U. S. governments have been providing the public about Fukushima, and what steps can be taken to protect you from radiation exposure. 

This one-hour program is suitable for ages 12 and older and will include a question-and-answer session.  Contact the Library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.

Learn How Acupuncture Can Benefit Your Health at Selected Oahu Libraries

“Acupuncture and Your Health,” a free informational program, will be offered at five Oahu public libraries in May – June 2013. 

Licensed acupuncturist Mei-Lin Maunakea will discuss how acupuncture and other treatment modalities used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can help to improve your health.  Research has shown that acupuncture can help to improve blood circulation, reduce inflammation, improve quality of sleep and increase energy level. 

The one-hour program is suitable for ages 12 and older and will include a question-and-answer session.  “Acupuncture and Your Health” will be presented at these libraries:

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Geobunga will host a free Mother’s Day Orchid Workshop that will teach attendees how to transplant, split, prune and properly care for orchid plants. Geobunga will have hundreds of beautiful orchids available at farm-direct wholesale prices, starting as low as $5.

Learn How to Create Your Own Monster at Aiea Library on April 27

“How to Create Your Own Monster,” a free workshop, will be presented at the Aiea Public Library on Saturday, April 27 at 1 p.m. in the Meeting Room.       

Comic Jam Hawaii, a local artists group on Facebook, will conduct the 2 ½-hour workshop for ages 8 and older.  The workshop will cover basic considerations and inspirations for monster designs followed by a couple of monster design demonstrations.  Participants will then have time to draw their own monster creations.  All children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.      

Paper, pencils, and crayons will be provided.  Participants may also bring their own art supplies.

Contact the Library as soon as possible if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.
