More than 150 Bank of Hawaii and military volunteers partnered to support financial education, to spruce up Makalapa Elementary and Radford High School, and to heighten driver awareness of the need to slow down around local schools on Saturday. These activities were all part of National Community Service Day 2012, and included volunteer support from the Navy League of the United States, USO, Operation Homefront, and the Military and Family Support Center.

In conjunction with Pedestrian Safety Month, the morning started with a “Traffic Slow Down” along Salt Lake Blvd. Volunteers waved signs to remind drivers to slow down in this area where many students walk to and from school. The Honolulu Police Department assisted BOH and military volunteers.

Then the group split up, with about half the BOH and military volunteers going to Makalapa Elementary to clean and paint the parking lot, while the rest cleaned and painted locker rooms and walls at Radford High School.

Bank of Hawaii also facilitated a BOH Smart Money Seminar at today’s event, offering tips to the public on how to protect themselves from fraud. Keiki in attendance were treated to a special financial education “game show” activity. Bank of Hawaii Foundation also made a grant of $5,000 to Makalapa Elementary School PTA in conjunction with this event.

This is the seventh consecutive year that Bank of Hawaii has participated in the national community service initiative. The bank chose to volunteer at these schools in particular because it wanted to demonstrate its support for the military and their families. More than 60 percent of the students attending Makalapa Elementary and Radford belong to military families.
