Since taking over the franchise in June 2011, the new owners of Dave's Ice Cream has added a few items to its menu.  Such new items include Ice Cream Cakes, Ice Cream Pies, and Ice Cream Cupcakes. They are also featuring an all new drink called 'the Freeze',  which is their version of a Frappe made with Dave’s ice cream.  In addition, customers can now enjoy re-vamped Sundaes and Tiramisu and Cookie Sundaes.

"We renovated the store and would like to showcase our 33 year old location to the people of Hawaii.  I first visited the store when I was 8 with a brother of mine who had since died of cancer.   It’s unbelievable that I can now own a piece of this historic landmark in Aiea.  People around the area come to our store often speaking about their early childhood memories of the ice cream shop,"said co-owner Marvin Galicha.

The U.S.S. Chosin, a guided missile destroyer stationed at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam, has a new commander.

Captain patrick Kelly took control of the ship at a ceremony today.

He replaces Captain David Kelly, who was promoted after two years as the Chosin's commander.

Shafter Elementary Principal named as finalist in $25,000 School Leadership Award

Principal Robin Martin of Shafter Elementary School was named a finalist in the 2012 Masayuki Tokioka Excellence in School Leadership Awards. One Hawaii public school principal will receive $25,000 (a $10,000 personal cash award and $15,000 towards a school project of his or her choice). The recipient of this year’s award will be announced at the Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation dinner on April 13, 2012 in Honolulu.

The award, which is named after Island Insurance founder Masayuki Tokioka is underwritten by the Island Insurance Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Island Insurance Companies.  11 public school principals from across the state are finalists for the award which recognizes outstanding school principals across the state and their efforts to provide high-quality learning opportunities for their students.

Hawaii Energy, the conservation and efficiency program for Hawaii, Honolulu and Maui counties, has teamed up with Leeward Community College (Leeward CC) and University of Hawaii West Oahu for the 10th Annual Leeward Career, College and Job Fair taking place April 4, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the Pearl City campus.  Through Hawaii Energy’s sponsorship, this year’s event will focus on “Clean Energy Connections,” which are clean energy career and training opportunities for attendees and participants.  As part of its sponsorship, Hawaii Energy is encouraging residents and employers from all sectors to mark their calendars and participate in the event.

Free workshops on technology and today’s digital lifestyle are offered at the third annual GEEK DAY @ LEEWARD on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Leeward Community College, from 9:30 am-2:30 pm.

The College offers free hands-on workshops and demonstrations on a variety of digital, mobile and technology topics, from social media and cloud computing to digital photography and video.  The sessions are designed for the general public, with several sessions geared specifically to educators, small businesses and non-profits.

All activities are free and open to the public. Workshops include both Mac and Windows platforms.

Doors open at 9:00 a.m. for registration, with the first session beginning at 9:30 am. Door prizes include an iPod Touch, Apple TV, iTunes certificates and more.
