Highlands Intermediate student holding who brought gun to school expelled

The student who was arrested after the shooting at Highlands Intermediate on Monday has been expelled, according to his family.

The 14-year-old boy's father, Jason Takayesu, says he's sorry for Monday's incident.

Takayesu says his son found the gun behind the Highlands Intermediate gym.

The eighth grader told his dad that he was showing the firearm to his friends when one of them pushed it away, and that's when the weapon went off.

According to police, the bullet hit a wall, ricocheted, then split into pieces and struck another student.

Investigators are still trying to piece together how the gun ended up on campus.

Honolulu police were at Highlands Intermediate Monday morning after a gun went off on campus.

According to police, a 14-year-old boy brought a .45 caliber Glock semi-automatic to school. The boy then showed it to his friends near the basketball courts.

The boy took off the magazine, still bullet in chamber, and pointed it at his friend. His friend then hit the gun away, causing it to go off.

According to police, the bullet that was still in the chamber hit a lava rock wall and bounced off and through a 14-year-old boy's jacket. The bullet continued on and hit a second wall.
