Matson Foundation Makes Lead Donation for Special Olympics Hawai‘i Sports and Wellness Center in West O‘ahu

The first-of-its-kind sports complex will provide access to sports training and competition opportunities for local athletes with intellectual disabilities

HONOLULU – The Matson Foundation is helping Special Olympics Hawai‘i build upon its dreams to establish the state’s first sports and wellness center for local athletes with intellectual disabilities. The foundation recently announced a lead $25,000 donation to help fund the creation of the Special Olympics Hawai‘i Sports and Wellness Center  in Kapolei -- a world-class center which is being designed specifically to unite athletes of all ability levels and serve thousands of athletes and their families across the state.

USS Utah Memorial will be closed during month of October

Honolulu, Hawaii – The USS Utah Memorial located on Ford Island will be closed for renovations from October 1 through 31, 2012.  The work will include the recycling of three existing ramps replacing them with a new concrete ramp, the installation of wire cables between existing rails, repainting the Memorial deck and various landscape improvements. Completion of the project will bring the Memorial into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
 
All equipment, supplies and labor associated with the USS Utah Memorial renovation are donated to the National Park Service as part of an Eagle Scout Service Project from Troop 180 of the Aloha Council.

 The following information is provided by the Department of Transportation:

HONOLULU — The state Department of Transportation advises Honolulu residents of an expected increase in aircraft traffic over the area due to airfield maintenance work at the Honolulu International Airport. Runway 4R/22L will be closed on Monday, September 10, through Tuesday, September 11 for airfield maintenance work. Runway 8R/26L will be closed on Tuesday, September 11, through Saturday morning, September 15, nightly, for airfield maintenance work. During this time, flight patterns will be modified, resulting in increased air traffic over Downtown Honolulu.

City Councilmember Breene Harimoto, Mayor Peter Carlisle, Department of Parks and Recreation Director Gary Cabato, and Donald Devaney, President of the Newtown Estates Community Association held a blessing and dedication ceremony to celebrate the opening of the newly constructed Newtown Neighborhood Park Parking Lot.

This new public parking lot, located at 98-434 Kaahele Street in the Newtown community, is a long-awaited improvement that provides park users with a safe and convenient access to their neighborhood park.

Governor Neil Abercrombie today announced the release of more than $92.8 million for various Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) designed to maintain, upgrade and expand transportation infrastructure across Hawaii.

"Our highways, airports and harbors are essential to island commerce and our way of life; everyone depends on the daily reliability and functionality of this core infrastructure," said Governor Abercrombie.
