FIRST INSURANCE COMPANY OF HAWAII NAMES JEFF SHONKA SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT, CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

 

HONOLULU – The First Insurance Company of Hawaii (FICOH) board of directors has elected Jeff Shonka senior vice president, chief operating officer (COO). Shonka joined FICOH in 2002 as its chief financial officer. With this promotion, Shonka has assumed responsibility for key operational areas of the company, including Claims, Personal and Commercial Lines, Legal, Surety & Fidelity, and First Risk Management Services (FiRMS), a subsidiary brokerage operation for non-standard risks.

“Jeff is an invaluable member of the executive team who during his 10 years with First Insurance has not only earned the respect and trust of our officers, but of his department, our company and other industry leaders in Hawaii,” said Allen Uyeda, president and CEO of First Insurance.

The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) wants to inform drivers that archaeological survey work continues next week in the urban Honolulu area for the rail transit project.

Motorists are advised of lane closures related to the survey work being conducted in the Pearl Harbor, Airport and Kakaako areas. Work will require lane closures during non-peak traffic hours.

For the safety of both the work crews and motorists, the public is advised to proceed with caution through these areas. Drivers should anticipate possible traffic delays or use alternate routes during work hours, and provide a safe distance between themselves and the construction workers and equipment.

Work for the week of Sunday, August 5, through Saturday, August 11, will take place at the following locations between the hours of 8:30 a.m.

City Councilmember Breene Harimoto, Mayor Peter Carlisle, Department of Parks and Recreation Director Gary Cabato, and Donald Devaney, President of the Newtown Estates Community Association held a blessing and dedication ceremony to celebrate the opening of the newly constructed Newtown Neighborhood Park Parking Lot.

This new public parking lot, located at 98-434 Kaahele Street in the Newtown community, is a long-awaited improvement that provides park users with a safe and convenient access to their neighborhood park.

DOT Launches H-1 Freeway PM Contraflow Project with Groundbreaking Ceremony

The state Department of Transportation (DOT) launched the H-1 Freeway PM Contraflow Project in a groundbreaking cerermony earlier today. The project will create a dedicated ZipperLane in the westbound direction for weekday afternoon rush-hours to provide extra capacity on the H-1 Freeway between Pearl Harbor, near the Radford Drive Overpass, and Waikele, over a distance of approximately 7.2-miles.

The dedicated lane will benefit not only motorists traveling to Waikele and points west during afternoon peak traffic, but all westbound freeway motorists, by removing contraflow vehicles from the normal traffic lanes.

"The time saved for communters translates directly into an imporoved quality of life, as motorists can get home to their families faster and save money on gas," said DOT Director Glenn Okimoto.
